At Urban Arts Academy we provide a unique environment for interns to be able to put their academic knowledge into practice. We work with high schools, colleges, and universities as well as individuals outside of the academic field, to foster opportunities to further one’s knowledge in Arts Education, Non-Profit Administration, Community Development and Youth Engagement. We value the insight and creativity of our interns, and want to offer professional positions that suit your goals, your sponsoring institution, and our own mission.
Internships are typically 145 hours and can be completed over the course of your academic semester/term, or during the summer.
Arts Education: Interns work in our after-school program and have a combination of responsibilities in and outside of the classroom. This includes helping to create curriculum, hands-on work with students providing art-infused tutoring, and assistance with art projects. These individuals work closely with all of our staff and Community Artists.
Environmental Arts Education: Interns work with staff in developing curriculum, and teach and work with students, local artists and community activists. Previous curriculum has included the installation and care of our “Urban Farm” and “Earth Boxes”, the use of recycled and found art materials, and education around recycling and composting.
Nutritional Specialist: Specialists work in our after-school program with both families & students to provide healthy nutritional experiences. They support staff in our organic food shelf program & help provide cooking and learning experience for children living in poverty. Interns must have a passion for nutrition & a desire to share this with students of all ages and backgrounds.
Early Childhood Education Specialist: In this internship you work closely with staff in our Arts Preschool to develop arts curriculum and work one-on-one in the classroom with teaching artists and students in a variety of ways. Interns learn and develop skills in the areas of Arts Non-profits, Bi-Lingual/Spanish speaking Education, Early Education, and Non-Profit Administrative work, depending on the applicant’s previous skill sets and goals.
Arts Administration: This internship is offered for individuals interested in learning the basics of running an arts non-profit. Past projects have included Grant Writing, Fundraising, Special Events Organizing, Outreach, Networking and more.
Spanish Language: Many of the students and families at Urban Arts Academy are Spanish-speaking. We are looking for individuals to dedicate time and effort towards maintaining accessibility to our programs, staff, and spaces through language. A Spanish Language Intern would help us translate documents, newsletters, bulletin boards, help speakers at special events, and inherently help us maintain a bilingual atmosphere.
Arts Mentor: In this internship you will have the opportunity to mentor elementary aged youth in a creative, experiential summer arts program. You will build positive relationships with youth who are in need of extra support in order to thrive socially and academically. You will work with youth individually and in groups to help them build self-confidence by encouraging creative self-expression through the arts. You will support them in developing tools for community building, self-regulation, and good decision-making. Experience working with urban youth and diverse families is a plus.
Graphic Design: A graphic design intern is responsible for creating design solutions that have a high visual impact. The role involves listening to staff, understanding their needs and making design decisions. Their designs are required for a huge variety of products and activities, such as websites, brochures, booklets, programs, posters, exhibitions and displays, giving the organizations a visual ‘brand’. The work demands creative flair, up-to-date knowledge of industry software and a professional approach to time, costs and deadlines.
NEW: Fundraising and Development Intern
Support the Development & Outreach Specialist in the following areas:
• Creating and fostering relationships with prospective donors/sponsors
• Coordinate and executive events planned throughout the fiscal year
• Work with staff to maximize existing programming
• Supporting the annual Gala, including requesting silent and live auction donation items, sponsorships, and admin duties
• Help support Give MN pre-events
• Identifying communication needs and goals of UAA
• Develop and implement a master “branding” plan for UAA
• Manage and handle several information channels and platforms (from live interviews to press releases and social media)
