Volunteer Positions for Individuals:

Mentors:  In addition to helping Afterschool Teachers with the flow of the classroom, Mentors are able to focus their attention on a small group or individual student.   By modelling positive behavior and healthy relationships, a Mentor provides the opportunity for a young person to gain confidence and support in their academic, social, and artistic expression. Some examples of activities and responsibilities include helping students to understand teacher's instructions, assist with art projects, helping students with homework, reading to students and listening to students read, engage in interesting conversation, and refrain from judgement over students.  The commitment is at least one day a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, orThursday, from 2:00-5:00pm.

Artist Mentors: Artist Mentors work with our Middle School students to support and engage student's artistic expression.  These volunteers offer their knowledge and experience as working artists to one or more students to complete collaborative or independent artwork.  Artist Mentors must be available to meet with their mentee several times over a semester on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00pm.

Academic Tutors:  At Urban Arts, self-expression isn't just explored through art.  We recognize the importance and urgency of supporting each student's educational growth.  Tutors help give the individual attention it takes for students to gain skills and self-confidence in their math, literacy, and critical thinking.  These volunteers not only help students to complete their homework, but also help them apply their learning through hands-on creative projects like reading and writing scripts for plays, learning about compost in our Earth Boxes, measuring ingredients for their organic cooking class, etc.  The commitment is at least one day a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, orThursday, from 2:00-5:00pm.
